Sheet 04

EDDM mailer formats

Any flat that meets the size, weight and content rules can go out as EDDM. In practice, most mailings use one of four formats.

Jumbo postcard

A single printed sheet, usually 6.25 x 9 up to 9 x 12. It's the cheapest to print, it's read without being opened, and it's what most printers mean by an "EDDM postcard". Pick a heavy enough stock that it stays flat and stiff in the mailbox, and ask the printer what they recommend for your size.

Folded mailer or menu

A larger sheet folded down to a flat size. A sheet folded to 4.25 x 14 or 8.5 x 11 gives you more panels for a menu, price list or service list. USPS measures it at its folded size, so the folded piece has to pass the size check. Ask your printer how they'll keep it closed in the mail stream.

Booklet or small catalog

Several pages bound together. It works as EDDM if it stays flexible and uniformly thick and comes in under 3.3 oz for Retail. Heavier ones go through a BMEU at per-pound prices. Weigh a printed sample before you commit.

Large envelope

A flat-size envelope with something inside. It's allowed, but every piece must be identical, and nothing inside can be personal information, a bill or a statement.

What doesn't work

  • Anything rigid. A flat has to bend. Boxes and stiff pieces pay parcel prices and aren't EDDM.
  • Anything personalized. No names, no account details and nothing handwritten or typewritten.
  • Odd shapes. Pieces must be rectangular, with corners rounded no more than 1/8 inch.
  • Door hangers. These are delivered by hand, not mailed, so they aren't EDDM at all.
