The rule in plain terms
USPS measures a flat's length as its longest side and its height as the shorter side. An EDDM Retail piece has to pass two tests.
It must be big enough in at least one way. One of these has to be true:
- longer than 10.5 inches
- taller than 6.125 inches
- thicker than 0.25 inches
It must fit every maximum:
- no longer than 15 inches
- no taller than 12 inches
- no thicker than 0.75 inches
- 3.3 ounces or less
It also has to be flexible, rectangular, close to uniform in thickness and have corners rounded no more than 1/8 inch.
Common sizes checked
| Finished size | Qualifies? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 4 x 6 | ✗ | Too small in every direction |
| 5.5 x 8.5 | ✗ | Neither side is big enough |
| 6 x 9 | ✗ | 6 is under 6.125, and 9 is under 10.5 |
| 6.25 x 9 | ✓ | Height is over 6.125 |
| 6.5 x 9 | ✓ | Height is over 6.125 |
| 4.25 x 11 | ✓ | Length is over 10.5 |
| 6 x 11 | ✓ | Length is over 10.5 |
| 8.5 x 11 | ✓ | Both |
| 9 x 12 | ✓ | Both |
| 4.25 x 14 | ✓ | Length is over 10.5. USPS has used it as its example for folded menus |
| 12 x 15 | ✓ | The largest allowed |
The 6 x 9 trips a lot of people up. It's a common postcard size, but it misses the EDDM Retail minimum by an eighth of an inch.
Is 6x9 EDDM eligible?
Not for EDDM Retail. The short side has to be over 6.125 inches or the long side over 10.5. A 6.25 x 9 or 6.5 x 9 card fixes it.
Does a folded piece count by its folded size?
Yes. USPS measures the piece as it's mailed, so a folded mailer is checked at its folded size.
What's the heaviest piece I can send through EDDM Retail?
3.3 ounces. Heavier pieces have to go through a BMEU at Marketing Mail flat prices.
